Charles van Lyden was an astronaut who piloted the Recovery 7 space probe. While investigating the disappearance and silencing of Mars Probe 7, he finally discovered it floating in dead space. Coupling with it, he then entered the main hull, but was kidnapped. His spacesuit was taken by an Alien Ambassador similar to the astronauts of the first probe. The suit was then used to disguise one of the three Ambassadors as they arrived on Earth in Recovery 7.
Charles is later found in the Ambassador's Ship, tricked into believing that he was sitting in the quarantine section of Space Centre. (The Ambassadors of Death)
